Saints Pius V, Thomas Aquinas, and Peter Martyr

1730-33

As Pope, Pius V sits higher than Thomas and Peter but wears the same white cassock of the Dominican Order. On his left a putto holds his papal tiara. On his right, Thomas sports on his breast the shining sun that is his attribute. On the Pope's left is St. Peter Martyr, with the identifying gash in his skull and at his knees the falchion used by his assassins. He is the one to whom the large angel is bringing the palm of martyrdom. The putto to the left of that angel is bringing Pius the keys that symbolize his authority as successor of St. Peter the Apostle. The putto beside him has a quill pen for Aquinas.
